Best of Texas Luncheon

The annual Best of Texas luncheon was held at the Rex Baxter Building on the Tri-State Fairgrounds on April 23rd. The featured speaker was Jill Connor Browne of “Sweet Potato Queen” fame. Guests participated in a silent auction and a hat auction that featured a crown worn by Jill Connor Browne. Proceeds from the luncheon are used to fund projects of the Amarillo Junior League.

Best of Texas Gala

The Junior League of Amarillo hosts its 20th annual Best of Texas Gala on April 23rd at the Rex Baxter building on the Tri-State Fairgrounds. Guests enjoyed barbeque catered by the Country Barn, silent and live auctions and live entertainment from musician Jimmy Wayne.

Childers Place Mother's Day Tea

Hosted by the Amarillo's Senior Ambassadors Coalition, three generations of women sat down together for a Mother's Day tea on Saturday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Childers Place. The event was celebrated with a Mad Hatter theme from Alice in Wonderland and featured tea, lunch and a silent auction to benefit the "Vials of Life" program.

The Downtown Women’s Center hosted their 2010 spring luncheon on April 8th at the Amarillo Civic Center. The annual fundraiser featured guest speaker Ron Hall, coauthor of the book, What Difference Do It Make.

On April 1st, the YMCA hosted its 72nd annual Heroes Scholarship Luncheon. This year’s recipient of the Harry Mays Award was David Washer.

WTAMU 100th Anniversary

WTAMU celebrated its 100th anniversary with a founder’s day birthday party on February 17th at the Jack B. Kelley student center. As part of the birthday bash, guests feasted on 1,000 cupcakes, an enormous two-layer red velvet birthday cake and washed it all down with “buffalo milk,” bottles of milk with the WTAMU logo. Music played as people viewed objects from the 1985 time capsule, which can be viewed until November 2010.

2010 Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics

The Better Business Bureau held its annual Torch Awards on February 26th at the West Texas A&M University Alumni Banquet Facility to honor businesses who perform ethically within the community. The winner of the small business category was Catmandu Inc. and other finalists were Scottie’s Transmission Inc. and Shreiner Plumbing Inc. The medium business winner was Elliot Russell Office Supplies and Furniture. Finalists included Broome Optical and Education Credit Union. Talon/LPE was the winner of the large business group and the finalists were First United Bank and Golden Plains Community Hospital.

Family Support Services Mardi Gras

On February 27th, the Family Support Services hosted their first ever Mardi Gras party as a fundraiser for FSS. Entitled “Let the Good Times Roll,” the festivities started at 7 p.m. in the FSS Barrel Building. Attendants participated in a Cajun dinner, casino games and silent auctions. Guests were also entertained with music from Blake Clark of Dumas and two local artists, Patrick Swindell and Pizzazz. Family Support Services is a non-profit organization that focuses on strengthening children, families and individuals in the Texas Panhandle.
