As a child, Alicia Eaton-Spoll would burst into tears when she had to come off the ice. Figure skating since she was 9½ years old, Alicia has been passing on her skating knowledge as a coach since 1984, and is now an instructor at the Amarillo Figure Skating School.

“I evolved into it,” says Alicia, who coached in her home state of Connecticut before her and her husband moved to Amarillo more than 10 years ago. “It was a natural progression for me.”

A member of the Professional Skaters Association, Alicia also teaches figure skating at Amarillo College. Taking on the role of an instructor requires much patience, Alicia says, as well as demands a specific skill set and technique.

“People tell you when you start skating, if you really like it, you actually become addicted to it,” Alicia extols as she laces up her custom-made skates. “And people are so dedicated here to skating.”

Alicia, her husband of 20 years, John, and their 13-year-old son, Sam, attend First Baptist Church, where Alicia serves as a Bible School helper.

Right now, I’m listening to… the wind.

In an alternate life, I would’ve been a… Broadway dancer.

The most famous or interesting person I’ve ever met is… Dick Button.

My go-to stress reliever is… my mom. She’s a good listener.

My favorite most-quotable movie is… “Kung Fu Panda.” The turtle, he’s the master. I like some of the things he says about the present, past and future and not to worry about it.

The greatest piece of advice I’ve ever received is… be true to yourself, from my momma.

My celebrity crush was… Davie Jones when I was 3 years old.

If I had a time machine I would travel to… I guess back in the 1920s. I love how they dressed back then, the long, flowing dresses and pretty hats and pearls.

My friends and family call me… Lish.

My favorite meal to make from scratch is… eggplant Parmesan.

If I had an open plane ticket to anywhere, I would go to… I’d like to see what Hawaii looks like.

One of my favorite childhood toys was… Giggles, a doll I used to play with.

You may be surprised to know that I… People are pretty surprised around here when I say I coach figure skating. Some people around here don’t even know skating exists.

My favorite bad-for-me-food is… chocolate.

My Facebook friend count is… I’m not on Facebook, believe it or not.

I’m secretly addicted to the TV series… I’m not really. I like Fox News. And “The Big Bang Theory.”
