Jason Jones

Jason Jones doesn’t enjoy being in the limelight; he prefers controlling it. The Randall High School graduate quickly learned he was more comfortable behind the scenes after he hosted the school’s talent show.

“That was primarily just so I could live life saying I did something on the stage,” the 21-year-old lighting designer recalls. "I can blame actors and actresses for not doing the right thing because I know how it feels now. I hated being on the stage. That was awkward for me.”

When he was 16, Jason took his first lighting job at Trinity Fellowship Church. Three years later, he started SixtyTwenty Lighting, a rental and design consultation business based in Amarillo and Austin.

“It was kind of a natural thing,” Jason says of learning how to work with lighting. “I’ve had a lot of opportunities to work with professional people that know what they’re doing and that are willing to teach me and train me and build me up.”

Jason named his business for Isaiah 60:20, a Bible verse that is special to Jason because it teaches us to have hope and allows him to share his faith with others, he says.

While Jason primarily works with churches, lighting services, productions and other events, he does enjoy doing business with other clientele.

“Every place is different," he begins. "I really enjoy going and working with new people and new productions and shows because everything that I do is different, from one to the other. I’m working at different places with different personalities. Getting to experience and design for multiple events is a really cool thing.”

Jason’s next job takes him to CBN where he will work in the lighting department on shows such as “The 700 Club,” an adventure he and his family are thrilled about.

“I’m excited to go and learn something completely different from what I do on a regular basis right now,” he says. “My mom seems to brag about it more than I do. She’s really happy.”

Spotlight Q&A

My favorite most-quotable movie is… “Napoleon Dynamite” for sure. I think it’s time to bring those quotes back, by the way.

The most famous or interesting person I’ve ever met is… I’ve met every late night host at least once, and most of the SNL cast members from the last few years. I find TV comedy people interesting because they’re all insane to some degree, but also outrageously creative.

In an alternate life, I would’ve been a… Backstreet Boy. In this life, I’m stuck in the background making talent look good.

I’m secretly addicted to the TV series… “Dance Moms.” I love drama, and “Dance Moms” is full of it. I also used to really, really love “Wife Swap.” Whatever happened to that show?

One of my favorite childhood toys was… I had an awesome karaoke machine. I’m telling you, I should have been a Backstreet Boy!

If I had a time machine I would travel to… Kindergarten. I was such a crybaby back then, I wish my future self would have come in and slapped me around a bit.

Right now, I’m listening to…everything! Seriously, put it on and I will attempt to jam out to it.

My friends and family call me… unfortunately, just Jason. When I was really young, I tried getting everybody to call me “Oliver” for some reason. My mom still gets a good laugh at me for that. I guess I just wasn’t destined for a cool nickname.

My favorite meal to make from scratch is… I’m a Ramen Noodles guy. Not only because it’s super cheap, but because it’s the most delicious meal-in-a-cup on the planet.

If I had an open plane ticket to anywhere, I would go to… maybe London. I’d really like to see one of those crazy British flash mobs that Ebenezer Scrooge was always going on about.

My go-to stress reliever is… tomato juice calms me down 100 percent of the time. Combined with coffee and I’m the most chill person on the planet!

If I were a character in a book, I would be… the male version of Luna Lovegood from “Harry Potter.” Except probably not nearly as adorable. And I can’t see Thestrals.

The greatest piece of advice I’ve ever received is… “Stay away from the light….Until you get some gloves. That sucker is hot!”

You may be surprised to know that I… have a twin brother named Jaron. We’re fraternal and look nothing alike. I got tall before him but he grew facial hair before me. It’s always a competition.

I know every word to the song… It’s possible that I don’t know the real lyrics to any song. I tend to sing no matter what.

My favorite bad-for-me-food is… TV dinners. I guess they’re really only bad when you eat a lot of them, but I could fill a shopping cart with them.

My Facebook friend count is… It’s in the 900s, I believe.

My celebrity crush is… The obvious answer would be Emma Watson. Aubrey Plaza is great too. And I’m definitely on Team Coco!
