A Whiff of Fall
When my alarm went off this morning, I could already sense a change in the weather. My bedroom was darker than usual and that meant an overcast sky was hiding the sun, and that meant the weather was gloomy and dark. Just like fall.
I flung open the curtains to find raindrops on the window panes. Excited, I skipped over to the computer and scanned The Weather Channel's website. Rain, currently 65 degrees, scattered thunderstorms all day. Yes!
Staring at the computer screen, my brain immediately went to the things I love the most about autumn: county fairs, pumpkin carving, sipping on hot cider, chili simmering on the stove and college football on the weekends. And the pinnacle of what I love the most about fall is the weather, and when days like this come around a little early, it is one big tease. I know there are still hot, suffering days ahead, and when the one-day blizzards hit Amarillo I will think back longingly to the warm days of summer. Per usual, we always yearn for what we can't have.
But today, I'm relishing the rain. And with the soft sounds of Alison Krauss whispering through my speakers, I'll continue proofing the September issue while trying not to daydream of hayrides, corn mazes and pumpkin spice lattes.
