Civilian Conservation Corps
In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of his New Deal legislation. This work relief program was designed to conserve and maintain the country’s natural resources and provide work for unemployed young men during the Great Depression. More than 600 workers spent four years in the Palo Duro Canyon to build a paved road, construct cabins and picnic tables and make other developments in the park.
